"You've poured your blood, sweat, and late-night tears into your new single. You finally hit 'Distribute' to send it to Spotify and Apple Music. You wait a week... and your song is suddenly taken down for copyright strikes. Let's make sure this never happens to you."
Today, getting your music on massive DSPs (Digital Service Providers) like Spotify, Apple Music, or Deezer is incredibly easy. But because the gates are wide open, thousands of artists walk blindly into a technical and legal minefield every single day.
Struggles like "Why are my streams not counting?", "Why can't I collect my YouTube revenue?", or "Why did my distributor ban my account?" are painfully common.
This guide is going to walk you through exactly what you need to do before, during, and after your distribution phase to ensure a flawless release.
The Prerequisite: Sonic Perfection
Before we even touch the business side, we need to talk about the product. A major reason independent releases flop algorithmically is high skip rates. If your song doesn't sound loud, clear, and punchy next to Drake or The Weeknd on a Spotify playlist, listeners will hit skip in the first 10 seconds.
The Standard Export Requirements
- ✅ Format: High-Quality 24-bit / 44.1kHz (or 48kHz) uncompressed WAV files. Never upload an MP3.
- ✅ Loudness: Mixed and mastered to competitive LUFS levels (usually around -14 to -9 LUFS depending on the genre).
- ✅ Headroom: Ensure your Master has at least -1dB True Peak headroom to prevent distortion during Spotify's conversion process.
The YouTube "Content ID" Trap
When you upload your song through DistroKid or TuneCore, you will see a convenient little checkbox that says: "Opt-in for YouTube Content ID Monetization".
If you are using a leased (non-exclusive) beat, DO NOT CHECK THIS BOX.
Content ID is an automated copyright system. By checking that box, you are legally telling YouTube: "I own 100% of the Master sound recording for this instrumental." But in a non-exclusive lease, you do not own the Master—the producer does.
If you falsely claim the instrumental, it will trigger copyright strikes against every other artist who leased that same beat, and even against the producer's original upload. When the producer reports this, your distributor will give you a strike. Two strikes, and your entire catalog gets permanently deleted. Only use Content ID if you purchased the Exclusive Rights or produced the beat from scratch yourself.
Choosing Your Distributor
There are dozens of distributors now, but they generally fall into two pricing models: Subscription (You pay yearly, keep 100% of royalties) vs. Commission (You upload for free, they take 15%). Here are the industry heavyweights:
DistroKid
The most popular subscription platform. For about $20/year, you can upload unlimited songs and you keep 100% of your royalties.
Best For: Frequent UploadersTuneCore
Very similar to DistroKid, but offers comprehensive publishing administration. They are incredibly reliable and have a direct pipeline for sync placements.
Best For: Serious PlacementsThe Pre-Flight Checklist
Before you click the final submit button, make absolutely sure you have done the following:
- Register with a PRO: Sign up with BMI or ASCAP (or GEMA if you are in Germany) to collect your performance royalties. Do this before uploading.
- High-Res Artwork: Spotify requires perfectly square artwork. 3000 x 3000 pixels at 300 DPI is the safest bet.
- Crediting: Input your producer's name correctly in the "Producer" or "Writer/Composer" fields. This ensures their publisher can track their backend royalties correctly.
- Lead Time: Don't upload today and set the release date for tomorrow. Upload at least 3 to 4 weeks in advance. This gives you time to submit the unreleased track directly to Spotify's Editorial Playlist Pitching tool via Spotify For Artists.
Mandalaz Insight: Sonic Armor
If there is a flaw in your mix, the streaming compression algorithms will multiply it times ten. Your vocals will bury into the beat, and the high-hats will pierce ears. You only get one first impression. Before you distribute, pass your stems to a professional mix engineer. We will guarantee your record sounds indistinguishable from the top 40 charts.
